  • Arbor Day Giving Away Trees

    Spring Planting is Near: Join the Arbor Day Foundation and receive 10 free trees joining the Arbor Day Foundation is an ideal way to get in the mood for spring planting. Anyone who joins the Foundation in February 2018 will receive 10 free Norway spruce trees or 10 free redbud trees to plant when the weather turns warm. The free trees are part of the nonprofit Foundation's Trees for America campaign. "These trees will help you beautify your home for many years to come," said Matt Harris, chief executive of the Arbor Day Foundation. "The trees will also add to the proud heritage of your state's existing Tree City USA communities." The Tree City USA program has supported community forestry throughout the country for the past 40 years. The trees will be shipped postpaid at the right time for planting, between March 1 and May 31, with enclosed planting instructions. The 6 to 12 inch trees are guaranteed to grow, or they will be replaced free of charge. Members also receive a subscription to the Foundation's colorful bimonthly publication, Arbor Day, and The Tree Book, which contains information about planting and care.   • Scholarship

    Thursday, February 08, 2018 to Thursday, March 01, 2018

    One $2,000 scholarship is available to high school seniors and college freshman interested in studying conversation and natural resources. Any student with a desire to study college curriculum related to the environment, ecology, agriculture, forestry, wildlife, aquatics, and similar fields is encouraged to apply. This scholarship is sponsored by the Robert E. Lee Soil & Water Conservation District. Interested students can obtain an application by emailing megan.johnston@releeconservation.com. Applications are due to the Robert E. Lee Soil & Water Conservation District office or to the email listed no later than March 1. Applicants must reside in one of the following localities: Amherst, Appomattox, and Campbell Counties, or the city of Lynchburg.

  • The Comminity Foundation

    The Community Foundation of the Dan River Region is currently accepting applications for 48 different scholarships. Area students who are interested may apply online through the Foundation's website at www.cfdrr.org. The deadline for all applications is February 28.
    Students who are graduating seniors or former graduates of a high school in Danville or Pittsylvania County, or Caswell County, North Carolina may apply. Each scholarship may also have specific eligibility criteria that were defined by the donor. The online application system will determine your eligibility for each scholarship.   • Centra 2018 Bereavement Calendar

    Through our Bereavement Program we offer support not only to family members of hospice patients who have passed but to the community as well.
    Throughout 2018 there will be Grief Support Groups held in a specified meeting location in Bedford, Farmville, and Lynchburg. In October 2018, there will be several programs held in the community related to Grief and the Holidays.

    Mountain View United Methodist Church, 1077 Viewpoint Lane, in Forest, will hold their popular Chili Cook Off, Saturday, March 17, 4-6 p.m. The church is located on route 221 just past Perrowville Road.
    This is a free family event and you get to sample as many as 15 different versions of chili from the various tables that are set up with small spoons and cups.
