Claude Norman Woodson, Jr.

Claude Norman Woodson, Jr., 99, of 2101 Laurel Lane, Altavista died Monday, September 18, 2017 at his home. He was the husband of the late Martha Elizabeth Cothran Woodson for seventy-four years. He was born July 23, 1918 in Lynchburg, a son of the late Claude Norman Woodson, Sr. and Nannie Catherine Ferris Woodson. He was a member of Lane Memorial United Methodist Church where he served in numerous activities and positions, the Coast Guard Auxilliary, Campbell Lodge 316 A.F and A.M. for seventy years, a charter member of the Lions Club of Altavista, a Past Chairman of the Board of Directors for First National Bank, and an Avoca Museum volunteer. Mr. Woodson was one of the founders of Boy Scout Troop 184 and involved at many levels in Scouting. He was a former President of the Altavista Chamber of Commerce and the Virginia PHC Contractors, and a retired Executive Vice President of the J.H. Cothran Company. He is survived by two sons, John Woodson, Sr. of Altavista and Kenneth Woodson, Sr. and his wife, Joan of Lynch Station; one daughter, Nancy Bogan and her husband, Bill of Greensboro, NC; seven grandchildren, Elizabeth Jessup and her husband, Charles of Greensboro, NC, Michele Grant and her husband, John of York, SC, John Woodson, II and his wife, Tiffany of Rustburg, Jennifer Morton and her husband, Martin of Altavista, Jeffery Woodson and his wife, Teresa of Dumfries, Heather Blackmon and her husband, Charles of Indian Land, SC and David Woodson, II and his wife, Abi of Winston Salem, NC; and twelve great grandchildren, Aaron Jessup, Zachary Jessup, Yancy Grant, Avery Grant, Chloe Morton, Jeffery Woodson, II, Thomas Woodson, John Woodson, III, Caroline Blackmon, Brooks Blackmon, Tripp Woodson, and Ike Woodson. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m., Thursday, September 21, 2016 at Lane Memorial United Methodist Church by the Rev. Rev. Ben Horrocks with interment to follow in Green Hill Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Altavista Memorial Post 36 and Gretna Post 232. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 1:00 p.m. at the church and other times at the residence. The family would like to thank the caregivers, Teresa Graves, Nat Graves, Alex Walker, Seresa Davis, and Dianne Monroe for their loving care.
