Edward Shelton

Edward Osbey Shelton, 86, of 311 Darrell Lane, Hurt died Tuesday, August 24, 2010 at Gretna Health Care Center. He was the husband of Thelma Cothran Booker Shelton. He was born September 4, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, the son of the late Harry B. Shelton and Leathia Worley Shelton. Ed was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church where he was a member of the administrative board, past Sunday School superintendent and Sunday School teacher. He was a retired Vice President of The Lane Co., member of V.F.W. Post 4165 where he was a former post commander, the Elk Lodge # 321, Gideons International, and was the Town of Hurt planning commission chairman. He was a former council member with the Town of Altavista, served on the Board of Directors for Habitat for Humanity, and Central Virginia Industries, past president of the American Furniture Mfg. Association, and the local chapter of Lynchburg American Institute of Industrial Engineers. Ed was also a member of Altavista Lions Club, and judge for challenger awards for the International Woodworking Machinery Shows. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army serving during WWII in China, Burma & India as a staff sargent. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one son, Edward Wayne Shelton of Altavista; two daughters, Deborah Kay Shelton of Lynchburg and Teresa Shelton Stallard of Altavista; two step daughters, Dale Booker Mitchell and her husband Glenn of Hurt and Kathy Booker Collier and her husband Danny of Hurt; two grandchildren, Kelly Farmer Arble and her husband Doug and Russell Edward Farmer; two step grandchildren, Jesse Worley and his wife Christy and Greg Worley and his wife Jennifer; one great-granddaughter, Gloria Louise Arble; and six step great-grandchildren, Austin, Hannah and Bryce Worley, Blake, Summer and Autumn Smither. He was preceded in death by his first wife Gloria Keesee Shelton; two brothers, Cyril S. and Aubrey B. Shelton; three sisters, Dorothy S. Shelton, Marie S. Franklin and Margaret S. Nichols; and one step grandson, Bryan Keith Hodnett. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, August 28, 2010 at Finch & Finch Chapel, Altavista by the Rev. Mary Jones with interment to follow at Green Lawn Cemetery, Hurt. Military Honors by V.F.W. Post 4165 and American Legion Post 16. The family will receive friends from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Friday, August 27, 2010 at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista, other times at the residence and at the home of Teresa Stallard, 50 Woodlake Circle, Altavista.
