Emma Joyce Mitchell Hamlett

Emma "Joyce" Mitchell Hamlett, 68, of 309 Rocky Ridge Road, Gladys passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Wednesday, April 16, 2014 at her residence. She was the wife of Alexander "Butch" Hamlett for forty-three years. She was born July 29, 1945 in Campbell County, VA, a daughter of the late George Ewell Mitchell and Jeter Manuel Mitchell. She was a life-time member of Lambs United Methodist Church, where she was very active and held numerous offices throughout the church. Joyce retired from the former GE/Ericsson Corporation with over thirty-five years service and enjoyed spending time with her wonderful family and especially her grandchildren. She is survived by two sons, Wayne Hamlett and his wife, Helen of Hurt and Tony Hamlett of Lynchburg; a daughter, Tina Hamlett Walden and her husband Brian of Gladys; five grandchildren, John Sims (Nicole), Steve Hamlett (Megan), Greg Hamlett, and Emma and Ethan Walden; four great grandchildren, Brentley and Mattox Hamlett, Liam Sims and Reagan Hamlett; four sisters, Mary B. Cash of Forest, Dorothy B. Kerr of Altavista, Anita M. Krantz of Gladys, Lena M. Hannah of Gladys, and Virginia M. Bryant (Ron) of Lynchburg; four brothers, George E. Mitchell (Betty) of Murrells Inlet, SC, Bill Mitchell (Shirley) of Gladys, Ray Mitchell (Judy) of Altavista, Glenn Mitchell (Dale) of Hurt; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Alexander "Alec" Brown, James "Jimmy" Mitchell and Franklin Mitchell . A funeral service will be conducted at 3:00 p.m., Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Lambs United Methodist Church by the Rev. Daniel Wray with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the church fellowship hall and anytime at the residence. The family wishes to send a special thank you to Dr. Dwight Oldham for his seventeen years of care, to the nursing staff at Alan B. Pearson Cancer Center and Centra Hospice, especially to Kim Hill, also to the her caregivers, Bill and Shirley Mitchell, Eddie and Linda Walden and Joyce Austin for all their care, love and compassion showed to our beloved Joyce.
