Frances Barrow Frazier

Frances Barrow Frazier, 88, of Concord, North Carolina, formerly of Altavista, Virginia, passed away Saturday, August 15, 2026, at Atrium Health Cabarrus in Concord. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 12, 2026, at Lane Memorial United Methodist Church in Altavista, Virginia, followed by a time of fellowship and a private family committal at Green Hill Cemetery. Frances was born on September 24, 1937, in Martinsville, Virginia, to the late Margaret Frances Ratcliff Barrow and Clyde Herman Barrow. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, William Stone Frazier III, and their son, William Stone "Buddy" Frazier IV, whose death at only 22 years old was a loss she carried with her throughout her life. While her family grieves her passing, there is tremendous comfort in knowing that Frances knew Jesus and had accepted His gift of salvation. After nearly 40 years of separation from Buddy, her family finds great peace imagining that reunion and knowing she is once again with both her husband and her son. An only child, Frances grew up in Virginia and graduated from Martinsville High School before attending Lees-McRae College, a place that remained especially dear to her throughout her life. For many years, Frances worked in the medical field, primarily in medical records, insurance and billing. She spent approximately 20 years with Lynchburg Urological Associates and later worked in endocrinology before eventually retiring. She was dependable, knowledgeable and dedicated to her work, but no roles meant more to her than those of mother and grandmother. Frances had a genuine appreciation for the simple but meaningful pleasures of life. She loved gardening, planting things and watching them grow, and she took tremendous pride in creating beautiful, thriving spaces wherever she lived. Whether it was her home on Myrtle Lane in Altavista, her time at Smith Mountain Lake, or later at her home in Concord, she had a remarkable gift for making things grow and flourish. Her care and attention to detail were reflected in the many times she was recognized with "Yard of the Month" at her home on Myrtle Lane. Frances also had a deep interest in ancestry and genealogy. She loved tracing family histories, connecting names and generations, and preserving the stories of those who came before her. Family mattered so deeply to Frances. After moving to Concord in 2010, Frances was able to live closer to her daughter, Brandy, and her three grandchildren, Wren, Jack and David. What followed became one of the greatest joys and blessings of the final chapter of her life. She was there for the kids' sporting events and school gatherings, soaked up every holiday and birthday, and joined in countless family adventures. She especially loved trips to Harkers Island, where she enjoyed walking along the beach and searching for seashells. She treasured her time with family at Smith Mountain Lake, especially soaking up a sunset on the dock with family nearby and, of course, one of her animals on her lap. She also loved the family's annual mountain trips, where she felt a spiritual connection to the long-range mountain views, and she always enjoyed walking down memory lane with visits to her beloved alma mater, Lees-McRae College. Animals were a deeply cherished part of Frances's life, and she had a quiet gentleness that animals seemed to recognize immediately. It was often said-half in humor, half in complete sincerity-that she was "Saint Frances," because every animal she met seemed to find comfort and unconditional love in her presence. Her pets were never just animals in the home; they were family to her in every sense. She was especially devoted to her dog, Lucy, and her cat, Annie, and the bond she shared with them was unmistakable to anyone who knew her. Above everything else, Frances loved her family. Her children were at the center of her heart. She loved Brandy and Greg fiercely and unconditionally, with the kind of love only a mother can give. Through every season of their lives, her love for them was constant, and there was never any question how deeply proud she was to be their mother. Her grandchildren, Wren, Jack and David, held an especially precious place in her heart. She had the gift of being present for so much of their lives, watching them grow up and sharing ordinary days, milestones, holidays, sporting events and family adventures with them. They never had to wonder how their Mimi felt about them. They knew they were loved. Frances experienced tremendous joy and tremendous loss during her 88 years, but through it all she remained deeply connected to the people she loved. Her family is incredibly grateful for the many years God blessed them with her and for a lifetime of memories that will continue to connect them to her. Frances is survived by her daughter, Margaret "Brandy" Frazier Gilmore and husband Jeff, of Concord; her son, Greg Stephens Frazier, of Altavista, Virginia; her grandchildren, Virginia Wren Gilmore, Jack William Gilmore and David Frazier Gilmore; her beloved pets, Lucy and Annie; and extended family and friends who were important throughout her life. Her family takes comfort in the promise Jesus gave in John 11:25-26: "Jesus told her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Anyone who believes in me will live, even after dying. Everyone who lives in me and believes in me will never ever die.'" Wilkinson Funeral Home in Concord, North Carolina, and Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service in Altavista, Virginia, are assisting the Frazier family.
