James William Markham

James William Markham (JW) 83, of 3412 Brookneal Highway, Gladys died Tuesday, January 31, 2017 at Lynchburg General Hospital. He was the husband of Barbara Markham for 61 years. He was born September 20, 1933 in Gladys, a son of the late Gordon Lee Markham and Willie Adel Lovelace Markham. He loved his country dearly and served in the US Army and was stationed in Enewetak Atoll, Marshall Islands. He was a member of Kedron Baptist Church and loved the Lord. He was the longtime owner of Markham's Restaurant who appreciated his many customers. JW had a great sense of humor and was known for telling stories to everyone. He supported many local youth sports programs, and coached in the Rustburg Dixie Youth Baseball organization. JW was a loving husband and father who cherished his family. He adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his wife, he is survived by one daughter, Karen Hubbard and her husband Bobby of Gladys; three sons, Mike Markham and his wife Susan of Lynchburg, Kevin Markham and his wife Jennifer of Dacula, GA and Rodney Markham and his wife Melissa of Mount Carmel, TN; three sisters, Shirley Elliott and her husband Jack of Rustburg, Nanci Markham of Lihue, HI and Brenda Holt and her husband Kenny of Rustburg; eight grandchildren, Amanda Mays and her husband Zack, Blane Markham, Logan Markham, Alex Markham, Camden Markham, Andrew Markham, Robbie Hubbard and Brian Hubbard and his wife Jessica; and three great grandchildren, Aiden, Alex and Grady Hubbard. He was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Frances and Linda Johnson. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 4, 2017 at Kedron Baptist Church by the Rev. Brian Reynolds and Rev. Roger Roller with interment to follow in the church cemetery with military honors by American Legion Altavista Memorial Post 36 and Gretna Post 232. The family will receive friends from 4:00 until 8:00 p.m., Friday at Finch and Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Gladys and other times at the residence.
