Janie Thurman Arthur

Janie Thurman Arthur, age 98, of 2421 Grit Road; Mother, Granny, and Janie, to all who knew her and loved her, left her earthly home, and went to her heavenly home on February 15, 2025. She was born May 9, 1926 in Gladys, Virginia to George Washington and Eliza Johnson Thurman. The Thurman boys were Lyle, Edward, Willard, J.B., O.B., John David and Carlton. The sisters were Okie Hall and Gladys King. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Terrell "Hayes" Arthur; a daughter, Deb Arthur; and best friend and sister-in-law, Verlin "Buen" Arthur. Survivors include son, Kevin and his wife, Cindy; granddaughter, Kelsey Clark (Steven); grandson, Collin (Katherine); and great-grandson, Cohen Clark. In addition, she had so many special people in her life, but we would remiss if we did not mention her niece, Regina Shelton and her husband, Ronnie, and special friend, Wayne Eades, who were so faithful to her until the very end. In addition, all of her extended family, church family, and friends, way too many to list here. Janie was a truly special person. She was a caregiver to so many and had so many "adopted kids" that she loved as her own. An excellent cook, she was widely known for her chicken salad, pimento cheese, strawberry pies, and coconut cakes. She was very talented and loved crafts such as crochet, macrame, painting and embroidery. She had a green thumb and loved both plants and gardening, and would can and freeze the fruits of her labors. She was a long-time member of Hurt Pentecostal Holiness Church. She was loved by all who came in contact with her, and though we will miss her dearly, we find comfort that she is now in heaven with Hayes and Deb and other friends and loved ones that have gone before her. The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 7:30 p.m., Friday, at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista and other times at the residence. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, February 22, 2025 at Hurt Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Latta Terry & Rev. Travis Cassell with interment to follow in Green Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a memorial contribution to Hurt Pentecostal Holiness Church, 1212 Grit Road, Hurt, VA 24563.
