Jerry Holt

Jerry Donald Holt, 85, known as the ?man with a heart of gold?, of Gladys, died on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 at Lynchburg General Hospital He was born April 29, 1926 in Halifax County, a son of the late William Jessie Holt and Alice Doss Holt. He was a retired contractor. Jerry was a long time member of Edge Baptist Church, Gladys, where he previously served as a deacon, Sunday School Director, teacher and choir member. Jerry loved to fish and the game of baseball. He especially enjoyed going to his great nephew Scott Bailey?s games at Lynchburg Christian Academy. He also enjoyed seeing his great nephew Adam Bailey play basketball and his great nieces, Kari and Sheridan Maines play Dixie Youth Softball. He is survived by a sister, Betty Holt Bailey and a very special brother-in-law, Harold Bailey, of Madison Heights. Although he had no children of his own, he claimed his special nephew, Gregory Scott Bailey and his wife Paula and their sons, Scott and Adam Bailey and his special niece, Susan Bailey Maines and husband Brad and their daughters, Kari and Sheridan Maines, as his own. His other special nephews are Jimmy, Sammy, Wayne and Tom Holt, Robert Lee and William Marshall; his special nieces are, Mary Alice Baber, Anne Rosser, Marjorie Guthrie, Nancy Duff, Katherine Vettori, Joyce Holt, Elaine Coates and Yvonne Burroughs. Also surviving are numerous great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, William Branch Holt(Ethel), Robert Henry Holt(Beatrice), Lewis Victor Holt and James Thomas Holt, who died at age 6; three sisters, Kathleen Holt, Lila Holt Marshall(Fletcher) and Doris Odelle Holt who died at age 2; two special nephews, Bobby Holt and Morgan Holt. The family extends a special thanks to Dr. Donald Carwile and his staff in Brookneal, Jimmy Harper, Pharmacist and all his employees at Brookneal Pharmacy and to his special nurse, Dorothy Cox and the other staff members at Lynchburg Dialysis Center. A funeral service will be conducted 2:00 p.m., Sunday, August 28 at Edge Baptist Church by the Rev. Steve Emory and Dr. Derik Hamby with interment to follow in Wesleybury United Methodist Church Cemetery. A reception will follow at the home in Gladys, to which everyone is invited. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Saturday, at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Gladys.
