Lucy Heffner Johnson

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Lucy Heffner Johnson, 72, of 15275 Rockford School Road, Hurt on Friday, September 27, 2024 at her home surrounded by her family. She was born June 6, 1952 in Surry County, NC, a daughter of the late William "Frank" Heffner and Mae Rene Hauser Heffner. Lucy's life was a testimony to her love for Jesus, her family, friends, coworkers, and the Duke Blue Devils. Lucy is a proud 1974 graduate of Duke University. She met and fell in love with Darryl Johnson of Altavista and the two married on September 21,1974 and were recently able to celebrate 50 years of marriage. Their marriage truly epitomized for better or worse and in sickness or health. Lucy and Darryl had two children, April Lynn and Shelley Marie. Lucy's friends would often report to her daughters how proud she was of them and how much she loved them. Besides her family, Lucy had three passions: Hurt United Methodist Church, Duke Basketball, and her work at First National Bank, and she threw herself wholeheartedly into supporting all three. Through the bank, Lucy made many life-long, devoted friends who continued to show up for one another long after Lucy retired after 43 years at the bank as Senior Vice President. The family would like to thank Lucy's work family for their constant support through these final weeks. Anyone who knew Lucy, also knew she was the world's biggest Duke fan. You couldn't miss the many, many Duke blankets, shirts, jackets, flags, coolers, stadium seats, cups, and more. Perhaps Lucy's greatest defining quality was her faith. Lucy was an active member of Hurt United Methodist Church. She led children's programming, taught youth Sunday School, and dearly loved the ladies in her United Methodist Women's group, participating in leading prayer right up until the very last time she could attend a meeting. Lucy lived each day as the hands and feet of Jesus - loving others no matter how they treated her or where they came from. In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, April Cox and her husband, Bobby of Evington and Shelley Gibson and her husband, Sean of Wilson, NC; one brother, Bill Heffner and his wife, Judy of Lexington, NC; one sister, Sylvia Earnhardt and her husband, Bob of Winston Salem, NC; six grandchildren, Robert, Grayson and Sophie Cox, Parker, Aiden and Bella Gibson; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00p.m., Sunday, September 29, 2024 at Hurt United Methodist Church by Tony Bowling with interment to follow in Green Lawn Cemetery, Hurt. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m., Saturday at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista and other times at the residence.
