Sherman Hines

Sherman Wayne Hines, 76, of Hurt died Monday, January 9, 2012 at Autumn Care of Altavista. He was the husband of the late Christine Hogan Hines. He was born August 9, 1935 in Bedford County a son of the late Stonewall Jackson Hines and Celia Marie Tuck Hines. He was a retired employee of Klopman Mills, a longtime member of the Grit Ruritan Club and the Altavista Moose Lodge # 1433. Sherman enjoyed his family, farming, dancing, playing baseball, and was an avid baseball fan. He is survived by two daughters, Sharon Brown and her husband Kenny of Evington and Tonda Davis and her husband Jodie of Evington; five brothers, Wallace Hines of Roanoke, Ralph Hines of Salem, Ben Hines and his wife Bill of Martinsville, Dickie Hines and his wife Geraldine of Hurt, and J. W. Hines and his wife Nancy of Martinsville; five grandchildren, Angelique Case and Gary Case, Terrell Lanier and his wife Cheri, Melissa Lanier and fiancé James McClanahan, David Brown, and Michelle Brown; and four great grandchildren, Trey Lanier Case, Brian and Rachel Case, and Aiden Lanier; one great-great grandson, Carter Lanier Case; a sister-in-law, Dot Hines of Gretna; a special friend and caretaker, Debra Jean Critchley; and a number of nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by two brothers, A. J. and Ray Hines; and two sisters, Pauline Knight and Faye Johnson. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, January 12, 2012 at Hurt Pentecostal Holiness Church by the Rev. Dennis Nichols and Rev. Mark Hopkins with interment to follow in Altavista Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m., Wednesday at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista and other times at the residence of Tonda and Jodie Davis, 580 Dearborn Road, Evington. His generosity, kindness and appreciation of the simple things in life will forever influence all who knew him. He would give whatever he had to man or animal in need.
