Virginia Elder

Virginia Rhea Halstead Elder, 89, of Evington died on June 9, 2019. She was the wife of the late Reginald B. Elder, Sr. for nearly 55 years. She was born May 26, 1930 in Pennington Gap, VA, a daughter of the late Everette R. Halstead, Sr. and Rhea Belle Bacon Halstead. She was a member of Yellow Branch Baptist Church and was the former church pianist. She retired as a manager for Wilco Convenience stores. She loved sewing, crotcheting, summertime and flowers of all kinds. But her greatest love was for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren, which she demonstrated to them all. She received great joy from all of their accomplishments and following their sports and other activities. She is survived by one son, Reginald "Reggie" Elder, Jr. (Becky) of Lynchburg; three daughters, Yvonne E. Mitchell (Robert) of Altavista, Ginger E. Young (Paul) of Goochland and Pamela E. Munch of Melbourne Beach, FL; one brother, Martin E. Halstead of Salem; a niece who was like a sister, Sammie Rhea Elser of Seminole, FL. Her eleven grandchildren are Stephanie M. Koren (Nick) of Tampa, FL, Brooke M. Austin (Marty) of Mechanicsville, Christopher R. Mitchell (Danielle) of Altavista, E. Harrison Young of Charlotte, NC, Thomas B. Young (Taresa) of Powhatan, Richard P. Young and Virginia Halstead Young of Goochland, Mychael M. Ballard (Ryan) of Indialantic, FL, Peter M. Munch (Paige) of Bradenton, FL, Candace Beckner (Stephen) of Hendersonville, TN, Cassie Ware (David) of Rustburg. She is also survived by twenty-one great grandchildren with another due this summer; one great great grandchild; as well as numerous nieces, nephews and friends. She was preceded in death by one sister, Beulah H. Pace; three brothers, Everette R. Halstead, Jr., William I. Halstead and Frank B. Halstead; and a son-in-law, James A. Munch. A memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, June 29, 2019 at Finch and Finch Chapel, Altavista by the Rev. Jonathan Falwell. Inurnment will be private. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service and other times at the home of her daughter, Yvonne Mitchell, 6760 Gladys Road, Altavista, VA 24517.
