Bennie Mae Dillard Atkins, 90, of Hurt died Monday, January 18, 2021 at Autumn Care of Altavista. She was the wife of the late Wilbur Gordon Atkins for 27 years. She was born April 6, 1930 in Pittsylvania County, a daughter of the late Eugene Emmett Dillard and Annie Dell Epperson Dillard. She was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church and a retired employee of Burlington Industries with 42 years of service. She is survived by four daughters, Elaine Atkins Gowen of Altavista, Glenda Atkins Keen (Eldridge) of Gretna, Madaline Atkins Wells of Ridgeway and Lisa Atkins Kestner of Albany, GA; one sister, Susie Dillard Bailey of Hurt; six grandchildren, Scott Gowen (Christee), John Gowen (Kathie), Jennifer Keen Moore (Jeff), Charlie Keen, Ryan East and Ashley Wells; six great grandchildren, Brooke Gowen Hedrick (Travis), Adam Moore, Holly Moore, Jacob Gowen, Kaden Gowen, Spencer East and Oliver East; and one great great grandchild, Zander Hedrick. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son in law, Raymond "Bernie" Gowen; three brothers, Americas Dunn Dillard, Coren Thomas Dillard and Horace Alford Dillard; four sisters, Mildred D. Mitchell Yeatts, Dorothy D. Kinzer, Blanche D. Dalton and Louise D. Bolling. The family would like to thank the staff at Autumn Care for the care and comfort that was provided for Bennie. A graveside service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, January 21, 2021 at Altavista Memorial Park by the Rev. Steve Morris. The family suggests that those wishing to make memorials consider New Bethel United Methodist Church, 7061 Dews Road, Hurt, VA 24563. Finch and Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista is in charge of arrangements.
