Dewey Douglas Lanier

Dewey Douglas (Doug) Lanier, 85, of Newport News, Virginia passed away Tuesday, May 26, 2020 at his home after a prolonged illness. He was born January 26, 1935 in Pittsylvania County, a son of the late Herbert Lanier, Sr. and Annie Watson Lanier. He was a member of New Bethel United Methodist Church, Hurt, Virginia and retired from Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Co. where he enjoyed his job working in the Sheet Metal Department. His favorite ship he worked on was the USS Enterprise. He graduated from Renan High School class of 1952. He loved to hunt deer and turkey and he especially loved fishing. He was a loving and caring dad and grandfather, a devoted and sweet brother and a kind-hearted soul who will be missed by many. Doug is survived by one son, Robert Wayne Lanier; one daughter, Deborah Sue Lanier; six grandchildren; three sisters, Reva Anne Dewberry and her husband, Sid, Kitti Keisler and Patti Morton and her husband, Don; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by a son, William Douglas Lanier; and two brothers, Herbert Quentin Lanier and Edward Terrell Lanier. A graveside service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 2, 2020 at Altavista Memorial Park with Rev. Ben Horrocks officiating.
