Evelyn Mayhew Worsham

Evelyn Mayhew Worsham, 89, of Long Island passed away Friday, July 26, 2013 at Lynchburg General Hospital. She was the wife of the late John Irvin Worsham, her dear husband for sixty-seven years. She was born December 3, 1923 in Pittsylvania County, a daughter of her devoted parents, the late Morris Monroe and Nellie Eanes Mayhew. She a member of Edge Hill Baptist Church for over sixty years where she was active in the Ladies Bible Class. Evelyn loved Bible Study and gospel music. She had many hobbies, needlework of all kinds, making handmade quilts and all kinds of scrapbooks. Evelyn frequently wrote poetry and loved to cook the old fashion way especially for family and friends. Her most enjoyment in life was taking care of her husband and sons. Evelyn was a Granny to many of the children in the neighborhood and was always there for everyone. Her door was always open for advice, a good meal, and togetherness. She is survived by three sons, Douglas (Bud) Worsham and his wife Phylis of Hurt, Johnie Worsham and his wife Peggy of Lynchburg, and Bobby Lee Worsham and his wife Ann of Long Island; two brothers, Clyde Mayhew and his wife Jane of Gretna and Carlton Mayhew and his wife Debbie of Chatham; a sister, Lucy Davis of Long Island; five grandchildren, Douglas Worsham, Jr. and his wife Kelli of Lynchburg, Angela Tarbert and her husband Ed of Richmond, Teddy Worsham and his wife Cheryl of Milledgeville, GA, Crystal Worsham Craig of Gladys, and Johnnie D. Worsham of Gladys; two sisters-in-law, Peggy Mayhew and Lucille Mayhew; twelve great grandchildren, one great great grandchild, numerous nieces and nephews and a special caretaker Betsy Durham. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Anderson, Alfred, Reuben, and Eugene Mayhew; and two sisters, Janie Lee Mayhew and Ida Worsham. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, July 30, 2013 at Edge Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy Robertson with interment to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7-8:30 p.m., Monday at Finch and Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista and other times at the residence.
