Joan Joyce Keesee Owens

Joan Joyce Owens, age 93, of Selbyville, Delaware died quietly on Sunday, March 30, 2025 at Brandywine Assisted Living in Selbyville to be with the Lord. She was born in Altavista, Virginia and was the daughter of the late William and Lola (Farmer) Keesee. Joan was known to many friends as Joyce while residing for many years in New Carrollton, Maryland where she and her husband proudly raised two sets of twins. Joan was born on March 16, 1932 in Altavista, Virginia. She was next to the oldest of seven brothers and sisters. Joan and her siblings were raised in Hurt, VA where she graduated from Renan High School and later accepted a position as a Fingerprint Classifier with the FBI in Washington, D.C. While in Washington, D.C., Joan met her late husband, James (Jim) Owens at the Kalorama Roller Skating Rink. They were married on December 4, 1954 and lived in Washington, D.C for 5 years. The surprise of two sets of twins meant moving to a new home in New Carrollton, MD where Joan resided until February of 2022. Joan was a devoted wife, homemaker, mother and grandmother. During her life, Joan's favorite past time for years was dancing at the College Park American Legion where she and her husband made many lifelong friends. Joan and her husband also enjoyed traveling to visit family in Virginia, New Jersey, New York and California. They also traveled across country to many popular destinations and started cruising with family and friends. Joan took up residence at the Brandywine Assisted Living in Selbyville, DE, where she lived until the Lord called her home. Joan is survived by four children, Debra Ann Mullaney of Selbyville, Delaware, Linda Kriner and husband Richard of Bowie, Maryland, Gary Owens and wife Linda of North East, Maryland and Randall Owens of Odenton, Maryland; one brother, Larry Keesee of Hurt, Virginia; two sisters, Jennie Creasy and husband Paul of Hurt, Virginia and Carol Faye Blount of Durham, North Carolina; one grandchild, Brenda Lee Spear and son-in-law, Matt of Elkridge, MD; and two great-grandchildren, Ayden Lee Spear and Kylee Elizabeth Spear. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by husband, James Owens; brother, William Edward Keesee; three sisters, Amelia Lumpkins, Ella Mae Simerly and Mary Jane Fox; son-in-law, Daniel Mullaney; and daughter-in-law, Rose Owens. A funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, April 9, 2025 at Finch & Finch Chapel, 809 Main Street, Altavista, VA 24517 with interment to follow at Altavista Memorial Park. A viewing will held one hour prior to the service at Finch & Finch Funeral & Cremation Service, Altavista.
