John Jerry Robertson

John Jerry Robertson, 73, of 2232 Robertson Road, Hurt died Tuesday, November 15, 2016 at his residence. He was the husband of Mary Bruffy Robertson for eleven and half years. He was born February 8, 1943 in Danville, a son of the late John Board Robertson and Mary Lee Simpson Robertson. He was a member of Edge Hill Baptist Church, where he served as a deacon and a retired rural route carrier in the Long Island and Gladys area with the U.S. Postal Service for over forty-six years. Jerry was member of the Renan Fire Department for forty-three years, the Long Island Ruritan Club for twelve years, a member of the Virginia Farm Bureau, a lifetime tobacco farmer and served as veteran with Army National Guard. He enjoyed riding his tractor and getting away to the beach. In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Jamie T. Robertson of Gretna; a daughter, Tracey R. Worley and her husband Mark of Gretna; two step sons, Robert Dawson and his wife Bonnie and Darryl Dawson all of Altavista; a brother, Jeffrey Robertson and his wife Darnell of Hurt; two sisters, Joan R. Thornburg and her husband BJ of Halifax, and Janet R. Sherwood of Altavista; two grandchildren, Cole Worley and Monica Robertson; seven step-grandchildren; seven step-great grandchildren and his father in law, Charlie Chapman of Altavista. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Drake Robertson and a step-son, Bryan Dale Dawson. The family wishes to thank Mildred Hall, Lisa Curtis, Patricia Carter, Sue Poe, our loving family, church family, friends and neighbors for all the love, support and care given to our beloved Jerry. Jerry, most of all was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend! A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 18, 2016 at Edge Hill Baptist Church, Hurt by the Rev. Joe Cornell and Rev. Rick Dellinger with interment to follow in the church cemetery. Military Honors by American Legion Altavista Memorial Post 36/Gretna Post 232. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m., Thursday, at Finch and Finch, Inc. Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista and other times at the residence.
