Lewis Christopher Barbour

Lewis Barbour, lovingly known as "Sugar Bear" by his coworkers, bid farewell to this world on July 24th at the age of 83 surrounded by his family. Lewis was a devoted husband and father, mediocre golfer who was very proud of those two holes-in-one, and amazing grandfather. Born in Pittsylvania County in 1940, Lewis led a life filled with family and love. He shared an inseparable bond with his beloved wife Dianne, and together they raised 3 daughters and helped to raise 5 grandchildren and 1 great granddaughter. Together, Lewis and Dianne traveled all over the United States in their RV. Their journeys were cherished moments that created beautiful memories with wonderful couples who became life-long friends. He could be found many summer days, always accompanied by a grandchild either riding the lawnmower, fishing, golfing or splashing in the water. Lewis gave 38 years of his life to his work at BWXT, where he was known as a jokester with a kind heart. The camaraderie he fostered with his coworkers earned him the endearing nickname "Sugar Bear". Lewis is proceeded in death by his parents Hassie Sublett Barbour and Daniel Thomas Barbour and his two sisters, Shirley Barbour Rose of Irvington, Virginia and Doris Barbour Ferguson of Evington, Virginia. He is survived by his loving wife Dianne Dalton Barbour; three daughters, Julie Barbour Janney, Claudia Barbour Newton and her husband Thomas of Roanoke and Johanna Barbour Derrenbacker and her husband Todd of Lynchburg; five grandchildren, Angela Janney Peters, Ryan Newton, Carson Newton, Kara Derrenbacker, and Sophie Derrenbacker; and one great grandchild, Samantha Peters. Rest in peace Lewis, as you embark on your final journey; driving your RV into the sunset with peanut butter crackers and fudge stripes at your side. You will remain in our hearts forever. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m., Thursday, July 27, 2023 at Finch & Finch Chapel, Altavista by the Rev. Donna Sams with interment to follow in Tree of Life Cemetery, Altavista. The family will receive friends from 7:00 until 8:30 p.m., Wednesday at Finch & Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista and other times at the residence.
