Nancy Neal Hughes

Our hearts are broken as we announce the passing of our precious Mama, Nancy Neal Hughes, who went home to be with her Lord and Savior on July 6, 2026, at the age of 76. Mama was born on March 2, 1950, in Gretna, Virginia, to the late Bob and Flora Neal. She was welcomed into heaven by her husband George Hughes, Jr., and by her sisters, Bonnie Neal and Kaye Neal. She leaves behind the greatest treasures of her life-her family. She is survived by her daughters, Kimberly Hughes, Cynthia Brooks (Hastin), and Sonya Stinnette (Lee). She was the proud and devoted Granny to Kamron Hughes, Karsten Hughes, Lane Brooks, Cooper Brooks, Ryan Brooks, Wyatt Brooks, Meredith Hall (Bailey), Bailey Stinnette (Joley), Riley Stinnette, and Carter Stinnette. Nothing brought her greater joy than watching them grow, cheering them on, and celebrating every milestone. She was also blessed to become "Great-Granny" to her precious great-granddaughter, Teagan Hall, who filled her heart with immeasurable happiness. She is also survived by a sister, Teresa Neal and a brother, Herbert Neal. If you knew our Mama, you knew that love was her greatest gift. She loved quietly but completely-with her time, her prayers, and her unwavering presence. She showed up. It didn't matter if a ballgame was five minutes away or five hours away; if one of her grandchildren was playing, she was going to be there. She was their biggest fan and their loudest cheerleader, and there was nowhere she would rather be. Mama was a faithful member of New Prospect Baptist Church and lived out her faith every day through simple acts of kindness and service. She worked at J. Crew, First Baptist Preschool, and Altavista Elementary School, where she touched many lives with her gentle spirit and caring heart. One of the ministries that became especially dear to her was Spirit FM's Butterfly Kisses program. With loving hands and a servant's heart, she folded more than 10,000 butterflies, each one carrying a message of hope and encouragement to someone who needed it. It was a beautiful reflection of who she was-a woman who quietly made the world brighter, one small act of love at a time. The greatest lesson Mama taught us wasn't through words but through the way she lived. She loved Jesus, loved her family fiercely, put others before herself, and found joy in serving. We will miss her every single day, but we are deeply grateful for the countless memories she gave us and for the assurance that this goodbye is only temporary. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Spirit FM in support of the Butterfly Kisses program, 22226 Timberlake Road, Lynchburg, VA 24502, so that others may continue to receive the same hope and encouragement that meant so much to her. As we celebrate her life, we hold tightly to one of her favorite promises from God's Word: "For I know the plans I have for you," declares the Lord, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future." - Jeremiah 29:11 Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 11th from 7-8:30pm at Finch & Finch Funeral Home in Altavista. A celebration of life will be held at New Prospect Baptist Church in Hurt on Sunday, July 12th at 2:00pm.
