Richard Admire Carter

Richard A. "Buck" Carter of Altavista passed away at his home on March 22, 2013. Born in Bedford county on November 15, 1916, he was the son of the late A. L. and Vera Carter. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty-four years, Carolyn F. Carter; and his siblings, Alex R. Carter, Hazel Carter, Lucille Goode, and Carlie English. Buck worked on the family farm, carried mail, and helped his father run A. L. Carter's Store in Huddleston until he was drafted into the Army in 1942. He served three years in the Pacific theater most notably the Battle of Guadalcanal, the Invasion of Bougainville, and the Philippines campaign. Upon his return home he married Carolyn Ford and they settled in Altavista where Buck worked as a superintendent for English Construction Company for thirty-five years. Mr. Carter was a member of Lane Memorial United Methodist Church and Mentow Lodge #180 A.F. and A.M. in Huddleston where he received his sixty year membership pin in 2006. Buck was also Lodge Master of Campbell Lodge #316 in 1988 and Evington Lodge #333 in 1995. He especially enjoyed tutoring Masonic candidates in the principles, teachings, history, and workings of Freemasonry. Buck will also be remembered for his prolific vegetable garden which he last planted at age ninety-one and his woodworking and building skills. Left to cherish his memory are his children, Dr. Richard F. Carter of Highlands, NC, Carolyn and her husband John Noto of Breaux Bridge, LA and Jane Carter of Chester, VA. Mr. Carter is also survived by his devoted grandson, Dr. Rick Carter and his wife Dr. Dawn Carter and their three children; and granddaughters, Melissa Carter, Madelaine Wilkinson, and Mary Wilkinson. Buck also leaves behind his special nephew Bob Goode and his wife Janice as well as five other nieces and nephews. The family wishes to acknowledge his wonderful neighbors on Hillcrest Street, and his special caregiver, Polly Rigney, to whom they will be forever grateful. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Monday, March 25, 2013 at Finch and Finch Chapel, Altavista by the Rev. Alan Combs with Masonic Rites by Mentow Lodge #180 A.F. and A.M. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at Finch and Finch Funeral and Cremation Service, Altavista. The family suggests that those wishing to make memorials consider a local charity of your choice.
