Vernon Moon

The community of Long Island, specifically ?Moontown?, lost one of the most influential and loved members of the community on Wednesday, December 21, 2011. Just say the name, Ray Moon, and everyone around knows this man and what a wonderful influence he has had on this community and on his family. Ray taught many of us to work on the farm, drive a tractor, plant a garden, be a good neighbor, help others without waiting for them to ask, and so many more things that we could never mention. Ray is having a reunion with his parents, John and Minnie Hall Moon and all of his brothers who have gone on before him. Ray was the last of seven brothers. His chosen partner for life was Ruth Overby Moon, everyone calls her Bunny. She was the love of his life, his ?Little Woman? and it was evident each time he looked at her. They had 67 years together and were blessed with one daughter, Brenda Moon Newman and her husband, Lloyd Newman of Newport, North Carolina. Pa also had two granddaughters, Wendy Younger Mitchell and Vickie Younger Compton. They were truly the apples of Pa?s eyes! He loved those girls so! Wendy and her husband, Doug Mitchell of Alaska further blessed Pa with two great grandchildren, Luke and Madison. Vickie and her husband, Stacy Compton of Hurt, also blessed Pa with two more great granddaughters, Olivia and Isabella. Boy, did Pa have his hands full with all of the activity these great grandchildren could produce. But if you knew Pa, he loved every minute of it. Then there was the great niece who was loved like a granddaughter, Kelly Moon Waller and her husband Eddie who cared for Ray on a daily basis. They were on constant watch for any needs and attended to all of the medication and doctor?s appointments. They even had help from their son, Ethan who would carry his Uncle Ray to the doctor to meet Kelly. Uncle Ray said that boy was a good little driver and he really enjoyed riding around with Ethan. So you see how influential he was? You can call him husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, uncle or friend. He was all of those and more to everyone who knew him. Special thanks to Dr. Elliott and staff at Staunton River Family Physicians and Dr. William Brown from Cardiology Associates for their care of Ray during his aging years. They are all truly caring physicians. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m., Friday, December 23, 2011 at Edge Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Chris Brooks and Charles Overby with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall following the service.
