High Bridge Trail Park

High Bridge Trail State Park will be open to the public between Farmville and River Road on July 28 and August 25 from 9-11 p.m. The public is invited to walk or ride the trail under the light of the full moon. Two programs describing nocturnal animals native to Virginia will be held on High Bridge at 9:30 p.m. and again at 10:30 p.m. These programs will cover animal morphology, trophic classifications and ecological functions.
The closest access to High Bridge is from the Camp Paradise parking area in Prince Edward County. Guests may also choose to walk a mile on the trail from the River Road parking area in Cumberland County. Those using bicycles are asked to use head and tail lights on their bikes to ensure that they will be visible to other guests. Touch-A-Truck Set for September 8

Touch-A-Truck is one of Lynchburg's largest family-friendly events which offers children a hands-on opportunity to explore the large trucks and machines they see but never get to touch. Created and put together annually by the Home Builders Association of Central Virginia, the event is a fundraiser this year for Challenged Sports Exchange and Jubilee Family Development Center. Touch A Truck allows children (and parents too) to climb into the vehicles and meet the people who build, protect and serve the greater Lynchburg communities. The more than 85 vehicles on display will include construction trucks and tractors, police, fire and rescue response vehicles, tractor trailers, cranes, lift trucks, utility and specialty trucks, Military vehicles and even a car-crushing monster truck. The event also features two Monster Truck shows, a sky-diving exhibition, a medical helicopter fly-in, Monster Truck rides, a large Bounce House play area, local mascots, and characters, face painters, food trucks and much, much more. NHVFD Fundraising Marathon

The Annual Marathon conducted by the North Halifax Volunteer Fire Department will be held Saturday, September 8, 10:45 a.m. - 8 p.m. The event is free of charge with barbecue and chicken plates plus desserts sold as fundraisers. Each plate also contains slaw, baked beans, and a roll. Hot dogs with all the fixings, homemade pies and desserts, and homemade Brunswick Stew will be sold.
Activities include: inflatables, face painting, kiddie train, Halifax County Sheriff's Department Drug Prevention Display, and Sentara Halifax Regional Health System presents free cholesterol, glucose, and blood pressure checks.
A 2018 Suzuki Kingsquad 400 red ASI 4x4 ATV will be raffled. A sampler quilt will be raffled. WKDE Radio 105.5 FM will be broadcasting. There will be antique cars, crafts, vendors, and the arrival of Centra One. Bring your lawn chair and stay all day!

A Car Show to benefit the Alzheimer's Association called Alzheimer's Awareness Car Show and Auction will be held at Regional Auto Sales, 4520 S. Amherst Hwy, Madison Heights, on September 15, 11 a.m. - 4 p.m. Car Show Registration is $10 Live Music from local bands, Auction of Donated Items, and Food for Sale. All proceeds will go to the Alzheimer's Association. Any checks make payable to the Alzheimer's Association.

The 9th Annual Lynchburg Beer Wine & Cider Festival will take place on Saturday, September 15, 12 noon - 7 p.m. at the Lynchburg City Stadium. Up until last year we have primarily focused on beer and wine however the ciders are becoming increasingly popular so we wanted to continue featuring them again this year. The event will also feature local artisans, crafters, area businesses, fabulous food and live music. Tickets are $25 in advance, $30 at the gate.

Annual Harvest Jubilee and Wine Festival

Avoca Museum, 1514 Main Street, Altavista, will hold its 19th Annual Harvest Jubilee and Wine Festival, Saturday, September 29, (Rain Date, October 6), 12-6 p.m. The event will include wines from six area wineries, San Soucy, Rebec, The Homeplace, Tomahawk Mill, White Rock and Bright Meadows Farm, live music from Barefoot West, Jodie Davis and The Pete Turpin Band, local craft and merchandise vendors, food concessions, an adult-supervised bounce house and the annual Avoca bake sale. Tasting tickets are $15 in advance, available at the following locations: Altavista Chamber of Commerce, The Bank of the James, (Altavista Branch), First National Bank, (Altavista Branch), Miller's Jewelry, Airabella Flowers and Gifts, Avoca Museum and online at www.avocamuseum.org/wine.
