Maggie Mae Finch Grief Therapy Dog
Magnolia Mae “Maggie” Finch was born in Ringgold, Virginia on November 21, 2017. Maggie, as we affectionately call her, is a Sheepadoodle, which is a cross between an Old English Sheepdog and a Standard Poodle. She is hypo-allergenic and non-shedding, which is very helpful in the world of animal therapy. She was chosen out of a litter of eleven puppies to be the comfort dog for Finch & Finch Funeral & Cremation Service. Maggie’s breeder helped us choose her due to her calm and gentle disposition. Maggie began her basic obedience training at a local facility when she was just four months old and recently completed her Alliance of Therapy Dogs Certification.
The healing power of dogs is obvious to most, especially dog lovers. For decades, funeral homes have tended to be places of grief and reflection, and most visitors do not expect to find a dog upon entering the funeral home.
Dogs can sense and recognize certain emotional needs of those grieving the loss of a loved one. Our experience shows us that the simple act of petting Maggie tends to calm those with her while putting them at ease during a stressful time of their lives.
Visitors of our funeral home are drawn to Maggie’s loving disposition and they love to stroke her curly fur. Maggie seems to sense their grief and despair. She calmly approaches people in grief, while her gentle disposition is always a welcome escape from the reality of the day.
Maggie is at the funeral home daily and actually has visitors come by the funeral home just to meet her. She offers a subtle distraction from grief for both children and adults. She is available by request to attend funerals, visitations, private family viewings, arrangement conferences, and other events where she might be needed.
In addition to her duties at the funeral home, Maggie visits local nursing homes and healthcare facilities to offer companionship and hugs to their residents and patients.
