Military Funeral Honors

Military Funeral Honors

Performing military funeral honors expresses the nation’s profound appreciation for those who have loyally protected our country in both war and peace. This ceremonial tribute is the last gesture of respect a grateful nation can offer to a

veteran's family.

Flags

Flags

A United States flag is provided free of charge to drape the casket or accompany the urn. Typically, this flag is presented

to the next-of-kin as a memento following the funeral service.

Headstones & Markers

Headstones & Markers

Upon request, the Department of Veterans Affairs provides a headstone or marker at no cost. Options include flat markers, upright headstones, and niche markers for columbaria. Additionally, a medallion that can be attached to a privately-purchased headstone is also available.

Presidential Memorial Certificates

Presidential Memorial Certificates

Families may also obtain the Presidential Memorial Certificate (PMC), signed by the sitting President, to honor the memory of deceased veterans who were honorably discharged.

Cemeteries

Cemeteries

A military funeral can be held at a private cemetery, a state veterans cemetery, or a cemetery within the Veterans Affairs National Cemetery Administration.

Veterans from any branch of the military are eligible for a military funeral, regardless of their rank or whether they died in combat. They may have served on active duty, in the Reserves, National Guard, retired, or as veterans of military service. Families of active duty soldiers who pass away can request both burial services and an interment allowance to help cover funeral expenses. For non-service-related deaths, partial reimbursements may be available.

Military Funeral Honors Eligibility

The Department of Defense offers military funeral honors to recognize the sacrifices and contributions made by our nation's veterans. The individuals eligible for these honors include:

• Service members who pass away while on active duty

• Veterans who served in the active military, naval, or air services and were discharged or released with an "honorable" or "under honorable conditions" discharge

• Members or former members of the selected reserves who were discharged or released with an "honorable" or "under honorable conditions" discharge

Additional eligible beneficiaries include:

• Members of the Commissioned Officers Corps of the Public Health Service and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

• Certain civilian or contractual groups that have been designated as active duty by the military, Navy, or Department of the Air Force services and may therefore qualify for funeral honors

The following individuals are not eligible for military funeral honors:

• Those separated from the armed forces under dishonorable conditions or barred from veteran's benefits

• Individuals convicted of a federal or state capital crime

• Persons found to have committed a federal or state capital crime but not convicted due to death or fleeing prosecution

• Individuals convicted of a federal or state crime resulting in Tier III sex offender status

• Anyone ordered to report to an induction station but not actually inducted into military service

• Persons denied military funeral honors by the secretaries of the military department

To determine a veteran's eligibility for military funeral honors, a DD Form 214, "Certificate of Release or Discharge from

Active Duty" or any other discharge document indicating honorable service is necessary.
